A few minutes later, the group of us were strolling into the restaurant, and I watched as Wolf, Abe, and the others rushed to their wives, embracing them like they hadn’t seem them for months, instead of a few hours at most. I felt a twinge of jealousy, but pushed it back down, reminding myself of why I couldn’t fall in love.

I turned to Harper. Her cheeks were still rosy from the chill outside, but her eyes showed excitement and happiness, along with something else I couldn’t quite identify. I opened my mouth to speak, but before I could say anything, the others were calling our names. Caroline, Alabama, and the other women had already gotten some tables, and they took over, ordering me to sit with the other men so that they could steal Harper and get to know her. I checked with Harper to make sure she was okay with that, and I could tell she was eager to talk to the women, so I made my way to the other table and sat down next to Mozart. They drew me into the conversation quickly, but I found my eyes continually drawn to Harper, needing to make sure she was okay.
